interesting reads from october 2024
An eventful few weeks for Wordpress, WP Engine, and Automattic. Every time I've sat to write a few lines about this, I've had to start over, as the situation has rapidly evolved. WP Engine sent a cease and desist to Automattic, and later sued the parent company of tumblr, and its founder Matt Mullenweg. Mullenweg has a history of responding to criticism in what I would call an unprofessional manner, using not only his own social channels, but those of the Wordpress Foundation. It is unfortunate to see another fracture in the open source space where users are victim to petty squabbles from those in positions of leadership. especially when some of those are inclined to act the way Mullenweg has.
Evolving Github Issues. Yay subissues and advanced search!
15 year old hacker exposed a zendesk backdoor impacting a large swathe of F500 companies after the company declined to pay out associated bug bounties. its a shame that what should be a good relationship between bug hunters, especially ones showing a lot of promise in the early stages of their career, are met with such a poor disclosure / payout process. not to mention the latent financial impact of your product being known for not engaging with security researchers. zendesk has posted their own "retrospective" on the topic.

Okay...
as it says in the description.
Yesterday, I got up did some Tumblin with my account @steamedtangerine (a seven and a half yo. account)-many of them vintage scans of architecture (one was an upbeat Peanuts comic). I went to work, came home tired after 10p. (EST), and tried to log-in upstairs with difficulties. When I hand typed the log-in, I got smacked with a big notice saying my account was terminated. I checked my email and saw no notice saying what this was about or any explanation as to why this occurred. In fact, the last notice was a new follow (many of them lately have been blanks or underdeveloped garbage with no activity in over four months with other redflags present) close to 6pm. So, somehow in that four hour period, I was axed.
Was this a glitch? Was it an AI matter? Was it a hack (if so, who posted what under my name to hurt me?)? Was it a brigaded attempt to take my account down? Did I block too many accounts? Did I report too many of the shady pornbots who had crappy video links to sites other than those like Chaturbate or Onlyfans?
I have sent in a request into the matter and I have made a post on Reddit about it. I am now using this new alt-account (never thought I'd ever have to make one of these) to reach out to other accounts to do me a big, solid favor. Some time back, accounts like @nemfrog and @moviesludge had been arbitrarily removed. I sent out DMs to other accounts that had supported these accounts in the past, and they reached out (along with me) to contact staff and support to examine and re-instate those accounts (I think I did with @nemfrog)-which, luckily, worked.
I am asking accounts like @mortifiedandawesome , @feed-the-crows , @moviesludge , @7wo7rees , @nycewell , @obviouswar , @memory-thought , @peculiarist , @vor765wm , @bitter1stuff , @donnerpartyofone , @nemfrog , @baskiet , @wee-toe , @hirokuthegoblin , @maa-pix , @donecant , @candont , @instamatik , @thatsbelievable , @lesser-known-composers , @brunothegrape , @roguetelemetry , @ursaminorjim , @eternalistic , @hokeoutsider (no I haven't forgotten about you), @artoftcbaldwin , @slcr303 , @ceevee5 , @beelzebunny (you-uh-still alive there? Kind of miss ya!) @snappingthewalls, @contac, @multifacetedwitch , @spockvarietyhour , @cosmicretreat , @fatmagic , @motherpussbucket , @gameraboy2 -and so, so , so many others (I'm sorry If I've forgotten, my head has been pounding heavily for hours lately) to just take ten minutes out of their time to send staff and support a message requesting they look into and examine closely my account steamedtangerine and please reconsider the termination so that my account will be restored whole and full.
I promise if restored I will (probably) be better, nicer to new accounts and lighter on the block button (maybe-unless this termination is a fine example of why I should do it more), and stop theorized too much about future conspiracies by shady imperialist sickf!cks (well...we'll see about that).
So, if you can stomach a few more years (months!? -sadly I heard the CEO of WP has been acting-well, he's been acting a little funny in the head lately) of me posting ugly gifs, outdated vintage imagery, cheap smut, old pics of Detroit art, and political bluster, then just do me this big favor to push for me to be restored (do an internet seance if you have to just to resurrect this ghost blog) and get steamedtangerine back up and running.

main cast for the story im working on, more info under the cut

SBS (Stacked Between Stones, it/its) - debateably not even an iterator anymore. it definitely used to be one, but it lost its memories in a botched transfer into a mobile puppet and now believes itself to be a purposed organism of some kind. it avoids thinking about where it came from. instead, it takes pleasure from exploring the world and honing its own survival abilities. it experiences the cycle, but is unaware of it, not remembering past deaths as something with a mark of communication would. it's incredibly prideful of its own competence, and initially offers help to RP out of curiosity; to see if it could keep her alive.
RP (Relentless Percussion, she/her) - her creators were convinced that the failure of the wider iterator populace to create a Solution was due to some instance of flawed reasoning that had tainted their data via the sharing of research. therefore, they reasoned, an iterator completely isolated from their peers would be able to find a Solution, as their data would be free from this theoretical error. hence, RP was built without access to her communication arrays. they were still built, as her creators wished to communicate with one another, but an advanced program was created to prevent her from accessing it. she spent the thousands of cycles between the global ascension and the beginning of the story working on breaking through that program. however, she was too scared to say anything once she had access, since she had never conversed with her peers before. she instead used her access to hack into private broadcasts and spy on iterators, with the aim of gaining an understanding of how to act. she is the person who initiates the story, as through her spying she discovers a plot to kill another iterator (SOP, he/him, ive posted about him under the name 13 Vases Upon Vines). since he has all non-local broadcasts blocked, she decides to mobilise herself and make the journey to him herself, meeting SBS and WP in the process
WP (Worn Paths, they/them) - the most recently mobilised of the group, they're on a journey to visit the structure of their closest friend, who suddenly stopped responding to communications one day, in attempt to find answers or, failing that, closure. they're unaware that SBS was this friend, and SBS is likewise unaware that it once knew WP. their puppet was poorly designed, suited for quick bursts of speed across the flat plains surrounding their can, but not for the long treks through rough terrain that end up necessary. they often have to be carried by RP, whose puppet is better suited to the circumstances.

How to Protect Your WordPress Site from Malware or Hackers?
WordPress is used by millions of websites for blogs, businesses, and online stores. However, because it’s so popular, it’s often a target for hackers and malware. If you have a WordPress site, it’s important to take steps to keep it secure. Here’s a simple guide to help you protect your site from hackers and malware.
How to Protect WordPress Site from Malware or Hackers?
Follow this step list given below to protect WordPress site from malware or hackers
1. Always Keep WordPress Updated
WordPress regularly releases updates to fix bugs and improve security. Hackers often look for websites running old versions of WordPress or outdated plugins, so keeping everything updated helps keep them out.
How to Update:
Check for updates in your WordPress dashboard regularly.
Go to the Dashboard > Updates section and install any available updates for WordPress core, themes, or plugins.
By staying updated, you’re less likely to have security holes in your site that hackers can use.
2. Use Strong Passwords and Change Them Often
Hackers can easily guess weak passwords like "123456" or "admin." To keep your site safe, use strong, unique passwords and change them every few months.
Tips for Strong Passwords:
Use a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
Don’t use simple information like your name or "admin."
Consider using a password manager to create and store complex passwords securely.
Strong passwords are one of the simplest ways to add security to your website.
3. Limit Login Attempts
Hackers often try to break into websites by guessing the login password over and over. You can protect your site by limiting the number of login attempts a person (or bot) can make.
How to Limit Login Attempts:
Use plugins like Limit Login Attempts Reloaded or WP Limit Login Attempts.
These plugins lock out users after a certain number of failed login attempts.
This makes it much harder for hackers to keep guessing passwords.
4. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Two-factor authentication adds another layer of security. In addition to entering your password, you’ll also need to input a code sent to your phone or email. Even if someone knows your password, they won’t be able to log in without this extra code.
How to Set Up 2FA:
Install a plugin like Google Authenticator or Two-Factor.
Set it up by scanning a QR code and linking your account to an app like Google Authenticator or Authy.
This ensures that only you can access your site, even if someone steals your password.
5. Use a Security Plugin
A security plugin can protect your WordPress site from different types of attacks, like malware or brute force attempts. These plugins act as your site’s security guard, offering tools like firewalls and malware scanning.
Recommended Security Plugins:
Wordfence Security: Includes a firewall and real-time monitoring.
Sucuri Security: Provides malware removal and a website firewall.
iThemes Security: Offers brute force protection, backups, and two-factor authentication.
Using a security plugin adds strong layers of protection against hackers.

6. Back Up Your Website Regularly
Even with good security, things can sometimes go wrong. That’s why it’s important to back up your site regularly. If your site gets hacked, a backup will let you restore everything quickly without losing important data.
How to Back Up Your Website:
Use backup plugins like UpdraftPlus or BackupBuddy.
Store your backups in safe places like Google Drive, Dropbox, or a remote server.
Schedule backups daily or weekly, depending on how often you update your site.
Regular backups help ensure you won’t lose everything if something goes wrong.
7. Choose a Secure Hosting Provider
Your web hosting service plays an important role in your website’s security. Some hosts offer strong security features that help protect your site. Make sure to choose a hosting provider that values security.
What to Look for in a Hosting Provider:
Regular backups
Malware scanning and removal
Firewalls
SSL certificates
DDoS protection
Popular and secure WordPress hosting services include SiteGround, Bluehost, and WP Engine.
8. Use HTTPS and SSL Certificates
SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encrypts the data between your website and your visitors. This protects sensitive information, like passwords or credit card numbers. Websites with SSL certificates also have a secure URL that starts with "https://."
How to Install an SSL Certificate:
Most hosting providers offer free SSL certificates with Let’s Encrypt.
You can use plugins like Really Simple SSL to set it up quickly.
SSL certificates keep sensitive data safe and make your site more trustworthy.
9. Remove Unused Themes and Plugins
Unused plugins and themes can create security risks, especially if they aren’t updated. Even if they’re deactivated, they can still be a weak point. It’s best to delete any plugins or themes you don’t use.
How to Delete Unused Themes/Plugins:
Go to your Dashboard > Plugins or Appearance > Themes.
Deactivate and delete anything you no longer need.
This reduces the number of places where hackers might try to get in.
10. Monitor Your Site for Suspicious Activity
It’s important to keep an eye on your site for any unusual behavior. This could include sudden spikes in traffic, unknown files appearing on your server, or unauthorized users trying to log in.
How to Monitor Your Site:
Use a security plugin to track things like failed login attempts and changes to important files.
Regularly check your hosting account for unusual activity.
Review your website users to make sure no unauthorized accounts have been added.
By staying alert, you can catch potential threats before they do any serious damage.
Conclusion
Protecting your WordPress site doesn’t have to be difficult. By following these simple steps—keeping WordPress updated, using strong passwords, installing security plugins, and making regular backups—you can greatly reduce the risk of your site being hacked or infected with malware.

Gameplay Concept
I felt too ambitious to lay this out before but was encouraged to do so. I'm not looking at making it story-based. I never really personally care too much about that in horse games. My joy is the riding a horse in a 3D space. So I'd like to make it a combination of stat simulation and player controlled movements. It's important to note that what I enjoy most is editing horse models and making competition courses. The actual implementation of these different breeds and disciplines is still in question. But here is my ambitious layout:
Start
Choose player character (male/female/other)
Choose discipline track
This will determine available starter horses
Choose beginner level horse
All will be able to get to Intermediate or Advanced without special training, but be limited by the available breeds (an AQH won’t be in the show jumping pool and a WB won’t be in Western for example)
Train horse to be ready for competition
Players given a week game time
They can choose to train or bond - this idea is very preliminary. Not sure I like the stress/energy component
Training increases stats, adds stress
Bonding increases chance of double stats from training and alleviates any stress levels. Bonding events likely to be purely text-based simulation at first.
Competition
Competition gives prize money
Buy new horses, tack recolors, etc with prize money. Could consider incorporating stat/bond boost items depending on how in depth that system becomes
Back to training
In the loop, random chance opportunities may occur
These include hosting a trail ride (increase to bond)
Taking on another horse (problematic or not ideal for discipline selected) – player has to balance horse training
Participate in schooling event (increase stats and stress [energy?])
Things like that; also likely to be flavor text only at first
Levels of competition
Five primary levels
Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Elite
Only certain horses of certain breeds can reach elite in each discipline without training; very expensive in market
Through training and playing through the weeks, player can increase their beginner horse to at least advanced level (dependent on breed; some starter breeds can reach Elite but don't want to limit choice of starter breed too much)
For flat courses and/or show hunter, a horse’s precision and execution stats have a greater influence over score than in jumping or time-based courses
Dressage, WP, hunter flat/hack will be marker base – a marker directing the player which gait or move vs an arrow mini game
Each discipline has three courses in a competition
Eventing: dressage, cross country, jumping
Show jumping: qualifier, main course, jump off
Can continue at any point; not realistic but more of a thing to call each course than anything else
Show hunter: flat, hack (flat+jump), jump
Western: a little more complicated to figure out. I'm thinking Western Pleasure, Western Trail, and Barrels
It's not true to realistic Western but it makes the most sense to me
Tight turns for barrel racing will be complicated to animate but will deal with it then. I have a basic sliding stop animation so I could consider Reining but I know very little about that discipline.
How coding will probably work is that discipline selection locks you into animation style. Couldn't do multiple different disciplines in the same run. Ideally, that is. Could always split into different games, too. Most ideal is that the course selection (training or competition) locks the animation style but that is probably unlikely.

The menus don't work, the menus don't work, the menus DON'T WORK...
OK, my few readers. I took a break, I went back to fix the navigation, it's unfixable as-written.
I need some complex stuff in places, I was willing to forgive WP for putting out a new site editing interface that barely works - as long as it has the basic features someone would use on a storefront. I'm an outlier. I know this.
BUT IT IS NO LONGER POSSIBLE TO CREATE A MENU WITH A WORKING SUB-MENU IN IT. IF YOU TRY, THE SUB-MENU LINKS ARE UNCLICKABLE.
I am using their site editor and their 2024 theme, I should say.
I crossed my fingers and looked for the (now liable to vanish from anything more complicated than a paragraph) "edit as html" option. Nope! It's gone! I can't fix it. I would have to hack the interface somehow to fix this for WordPress, within WordPress.
I had to go looking for plugins. I HAD TO GO LOOKING FOR 3RD PARTY SOFTWARE TO GET A FUNCTIONAL MENU. And, of course, they paywall features I need. I found a "floating" menu that actually does work well enough (it's a little cramped on mobile unless you put the screen in landscape mode, but at this point you should really do that anyway, I can only format so much) but the sub-menu function is paywalled. And I'm actually fucking tempted to buy (haha, I mean "rent") it. Because the damn thing works in dark mode and across devices. And it sticks to the side in a fairly unobtrusive way, which WP's menu will not. It won't stick anywhere. And it sure as hell won't do that thing where you scroll up and it plops down for your convenience.
But if I use that floating menu without sub-menus, it's gonna get longer, and longer, and longer, until it doesn't fit on your mobile screen anymore, or potentially your tablet or desktop, and then I dunno what happens. Also, in order to keep it small, everything is a cryptic icon that displays a title when you tap it (on mobile) or hover over it (on desktop). That's kinda counterintuitive, I don't know if I want my one working menu to be like that.
I might keep looking and find another plugin that also works that well but... it's not likely. Or, if I do, I may run into another paywall. They gotta get their rent somehow!
This is a stupid problem and so far I am unable to come with with a non-stupid solution. I can:
Put all the links in the header menu, and you'll have to scroll through EVERYTHING to find the actual content every time.
Put all the links in the content area, in different places and different combinations depending on the page. (And this would mean doing some reformatting on every instalment AGAIN.)
Start fucking around with the sidebar - I don't know if it works and I'd have to rip up every template I've already made to add it.
Put all the links in the footer menu, and nobody will notice them.
Put all the links in the floating menu (see above for the issues with that).
Make sub-pages for Misc/Notes and similar that are just lists of links and serve the function of a sub-menu.
Actually put the content on the sub-page and have it navigable via anchors (this seems like it would be a bitch to load, but most of my content is just text).
Make a list of links that isn't actually tagged as a menu, thus losing the collapsible function for small screens.
Kill God.
That last one is probably the most doable but I feel like someone would get mad at me. Like, Hazbin Hotel finally got its first season on Amazon, and if God dies they might have to rewrite some shit.
If I don't lay out the money for the cryptic icon menu, we're probably going to end up with three or four accordions that are not technically menus at the top of every page. And I'll hafta check back every once in a while to see if WP fixed their shit yet.
If they don't stick with that site editor and make it useable, all this work is going to vanish like chalk marks in the rain.
I WANTED to put up another six-pack in February. I have it ready to go! But the site doesn't work. If I can't fix it this week, I won't even be able to put things up without illustrations. And forget having time to fill in the missing artwork. I got enough to do trying to kill God!

Obviously tumblr could do a lot better about site stability and moderation that's actually responsible to this society. They won't, not because it's hard to do (they've been working hard, clearly, lately!) but because
mullenweg wants this user base gone. He does not like freaks and faggots. he does not want to please the user base, he wants us gone. It's inarguable now, the big lies he just told are enough proof.
As far as I can tell the two real options are • leave the site after vandalizing our blogs creatively or • aggressively buy the site off of him.
I guess that someone with the technical ability could wrest it from Automattic with hacking? which would be hilarious but… not really a place to hang around for very long afterward, huh.
asking for Mullenweg to change his course now is natural enough, but I strongly doubt he will. He's never done one thing that demonstrated any affinity with the users of this site. Considering the difference in tone & culture between WordPress and Tumblr, it occurs to me that he never played these kinds of monkey games with WP. Hm.
This isn't the first platform that freaks & fags made huge, only to be wrecked by hatred of its users & a desire for Normalcy its owners seethe with.
Unless someone gets the site away from him in a real way, I don't see a healthy endgame here. Ironically, tumblr folks haven't been so good at unifying, historically speaking but maybe some Reddit has rubbed off?
Dooming this site to die with its actual users could work. Asking Mullenweg to stop hating us won't work. I think it's been evident from the start with Automatt that he is uncomfortable with queer people and mad people. I think it's been more than made clear that he wants a transition to FB / Insta style schlock.
I think it's safe to say the choice to buy tumblr wasn't motivated by consideration of profit. Whatever the motivation was, or is now, there's not a diplomatic way to say "so, you've despised us so far, will you please love us now? and from now on" cogently.
